Islamic Calendar — Hijri Calendar with Gregorian Dates

Date Converter, All 12 Hijri Months & Islamic Events

The Islamic Hijri calendar is a purely lunar calendar of 12 months totalling 354 or 355 days — approximately 11 days shorter than the Gregorian solar year. Islamic events and holy months shift earlier by about 11 days each year, cycling through all seasons over approximately 33 years. The calendar began with the Hijra (migration) of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE.

The 12 Months of the Islamic Hijri Calendar

1. Muharram (مُحَرَّم)

The first month of the Islamic year and one of the four sacred months. Fasting on the 10th (Ashura) is highly recommended.

  • 1st — Islamic New Year (Ras as-Sanah al-Hijriyyah)
  • 10th — Day of Ashura (Prophet Moses fasted this day; recommended fast for Muslims)

2. Safar (صَفَر)

The second month of the Islamic calendar. The name derives from "empty" — ancient Arabs left their homes during this month. No major Islamic events.

3. Rabi' al-Awwal (رَبِيعُ الأَوَّل)

The month in which Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was born (and passed away). A blessed month celebrated widely across the Muslim world.

  • 12th — Mawlid al-Nabi ﷺ (Prophet Muhammad's Birthday)

4. Rabi' al-Thani (رَبِيعُ الثَّانِي)

The fourth month, also known as Rabi al-Akhir. No major Islamic events.

5. Jumada al-Awwal (جُمَادَى الأُولَى)

The fifth month. Named for the drying up of water in ancient Arabia. No major Islamic events.

6. Jumada al-Thani (جُمَادَى الآخِرَة)

The sixth month, also known as Jumada al-Akhira. Marks the midpoint of the Islamic year. No major Islamic events.

7. Rajab (رَجَب)

One of the four sacred months (Ashhurul Hurum). Fighting is forbidden. Allah multiplies the reward for good deeds. The Night Journey is observed in this month.

  • 27th — Laylat al-Isra' wal-Mi'raj (Night Journey and Ascension of Prophet ﷺ)

8. Sha'ban (شَعْبَان)

The month before Ramadan. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to fast extensively in Sha'ban. Deeds of the whole year are presented to Allah in this month.

  • 15th — Laylat al-Bara'at (Night of Forgiveness / Mid-Sha'ban)

9. Ramadan (رَمَضَان)

The holiest month of the year. Fasting (Sawm) is the Fourth Pillar of Islam and is obligatory for all adult Muslims. The Quran was first revealed in Ramadan on the Night of Power (Laylat al-Qadr).

  • 1st — Beginning of obligatory fasting (Sawm)
  • Last 10 nights — I'tikaf (spiritual retreat in the mosque)
  • 27th — Laylat al-Qadr (Night of Power — better than 1,000 months, Quran 97:1–5)
  • Last day — Zakat al-Fitr (Sadaqat al-Fitr) must be paid before Eid prayer

10. Shawwal (شَوَّال)

Eid ul-Fitr falls on the 1st day of Shawwal — the celebration marking the end of Ramadan. Fasting the 6 days of Shawwal carries the reward of fasting the entire year.

  • 1st — Eid ul-Fitr (Celebration after Ramadan — fasting this day is forbidden)
  • 2nd–7th — 6 optional fasts of Shawwal (highly recommended Sunnah)

11. Dhul Qa'dah (ذُو القَعْدَة)

One of the four sacred months. Ancient Arabs ceased travel and fighting. Hajj preparations begin as pilgrims journey toward Mecca.

  • Sacred month — one of the four inviolable months (Quran 9:36)

12. Dhul Hijjah (ذُو الحِجَّة)

The month of Hajj — the Fifth Pillar of Islam. Contains the best ten days of the year for worship. Eid ul-Adha commemorates the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim ﷺ.

  • 1st–10th — Best ten days of the year for worship, dhikr, fasting, and sacrifice
  • 9th — Day of Arafah (best day for non-pilgrims to fast; Hajj climax at Mount Arafat)
  • 10th — Eid ul-Adha (Feast of Sacrifice)
  • 10th–13th — Days of Tashreeq
